The Research and Transfer Centre e.V. (FTZ) acts as a bridge between the academic world at West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau and industrial practice. Its focus is on research and development across eleven areas of expertise – ranging from automotive electronics and EMC, through electrical power engineering, automation and mechatronics, to lightweight construction, laser technology, and utilities and environmental engineering.

As a partner to businesses, the FTZ initiates and supports application-oriented research and development projects and promotes the transfer of innovative solutions to industry. At the same time, the FTZ supports students at West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau through scholarships, work placements, dissertations and sponsorship of the WHZ Racing Team (Formula Student).

Knowledge transfer takes place through joint research projects, specialist events, further training, publications and active participation in trade fairs and conferences. Since 2012, the town of Reichenbach im Vogtland, Thermofin and a broad consortium comprising research, industry and education – including Chemnitz University of Technology, the Saxony University of Cooperative Education and Fraunhofer ISE – have been establishing a joint research platform for refrigeration and energy technology. The planned KETEC centre of excellence is intended to serve as a large-scale demonstration site for developing and testing new, efficient and climate-friendly refrigeration and energy technologies, and for transferring these to training programmes, the skilled trades and industry – an important building block for the energy transition, climate protection and the strengthening of regional and national competitiveness.
