Fully distributed work on and with Linux for more free software: An introduction to the tools.

At SYS TEC electronic AG, we place great emphasis on effective and efficient customised solutions. We draw on several decades of experience in hardware development and our expertise gained from a wide range of optimised customer software. In most projects, a lean Linux-based firmware serves as a stable foundation for this. We build these using the successful Yocto Project.
To keep track of all customisations, features and bugs in the source code, a version control tool is essential. We follow the approach used for the Linux kernel and the Yocto Project, and use Git.
As is well known, flexibility always goes hand in hand with complexity – and this is also true of Git. The Git command line is not only powerful, but can also be somewhat opaque at times. Almost every developer has got lost in the Git command line at some point. Many GUI tools for version control are either too bloated, slow or do not work on all platforms. Consequently, there is no one-size-fits-all solution, and choosing the ‘best tool’ as a middle ground between the CLI and the GUI is always a personal decision.
Just as the solutions we implement for our clients are tailored to their individual needs, we also aim to make our employees’ day-to-day work as flexible as possible. This includes the freedom to choose their operating system as well as the tools they use for development and version control.
In the talk“Magically Convenient Version Control: Git with Magit” (Sunday, 6.00 pm), our colleague Frieder Schlesier will present one of his favourite open-source tools from his day-to-day work.
Magit offers the full functionality of Git with easy-to-learn, logical shortcuts. Helpful context-sensitive interfaces make working with Git almost magically easy.
All common Git use cases are quickly accessible with just a few keyboard shortcuts. Customised modes and uncluttered layouts assist with merging and interactive rebasing. Commit comments and explanations can be written effortlessly in your usual text editor – all with less typing than on the command line.
