How SYS TEC electronic uses the tool for the IoT TeamViewer Remote solution
The IoT TeamViewer Remote solution has recently been pre-installed in each of our edge controllers, the sysWORXX CTR-700. This enables our customers to conveniently combine remote access and control with remote monitoring, as well as to collect and process data from remote locations. To further simplify the use of the remote solution, programming via Node-RED has been enabled. SYS TEC electronic colleague Nicole Melzer reports on her work with Node-RED as part of the collaboration with TeamViewer.
Nicole, what exactly is Node-RED?
Node-RED is a graphical development tool that has been in existence since 2015 and, amongst other things, enables the simple connection of hardware devices and cloud services via graphical data flows.
What is the connection between Node-RED and the IoT Partner solution with TeamViewer?
In our case, the aim of the programming is to make it easier to use the TeamViewer agent – that is, its interface. This is because, in order to send data to the TeamViewer Cloud, certain settings are required which users previously had to configure manually. With the help of the nodes we have developed, this process is now simplified. We use TeamViewer’s SDK (Software Development Kit), which receives our data and passes it on to its interface.
And what exactly was your role in this?
I wrote the nodes required for this. This makes creation and configuration easier and quicker. After all, Node-RED is designed to simplify things and represent them graphically, and thanks to this process, users don’t need any programming knowledge.
What was the biggest challenge for you in this area?
My personal challenge was my initial lack of knowledge. I’d only worked a little with Node-RED and JavaScript up to that point, so these weren’t everyday topics for me. However, it was really enjoyable to get to grips with the development tool and work with it, as getting started with Node-RED was intuitive and therefore straightforward.
What do you think are the advantages of Node-RED?
No programming knowledge is required at all, and you can get results with just a few clicks. It’s also structured in a way that’s easy to understand; you can find your way around quickly, and there are already numerous nodes available that are very easy to use. What’s more, it’s simple to develop your own nodes to adapt Node-RED to your individual needs.
