The search for new, forward-thinking ideas to make our roads safer is an ongoing one, and brake, chassis and safety systems are crucial to it. In this area, SYS TEC electronic has developed a testing unit for electronic brake systems: the XMS Box.
In practice, the brake electronics of modern vehicles are networked together with other control devices using serial bus systems so that diagnostics can be carried out. The XMS Box is connected to the PC through a USB interface. This produces a real-time-capable ISO-K and CAN controller, which also serves as an RS232/ISOK level converter. In this way, realistic driving situations can be simulated on a PC and the brakes can be subjected to a variety of tests.
The XMS Box can also transmit the test pattern to the brake system on a stand-alone basis (i.e. without the need for a PC). The test patterns are prepared on a PC in advance and then stored in the XMS Box. The brake system’s response data can be stored in the XMS Box and then read and analysed by a PC later on. Buttons and status LEDs allow the user to control the working status of the XMS Box at all times.
The engineers at SYS TEC electronic have also developed software to configure the device functions and drivers for Windows that create an interface to the existing test programs. Updating the PC software also automatically updates the firmware in the XMS Box so that the two components are always compatible. Following the production of a prototype, the XMS Box has been incorporated into SYS TEC electronic’s mass production process.
